Phu Quoc Souvenirs — Kingkong Mart Has You Covered
Visiting a local mart is one of the better ways to get a feel for everyday life in a place. If you are in Phu Quoc, Kingkong Mart is worth adding to the itinerary. Here is everything worth knowing before you go.
What Is Kingkong Mart?
Kingkong Mart is the only comprehensive shopping mart in Phu Quoc. The store is not large, but it covers clothing, food and drinks, accessories, souvenirs, luggage, and most other things a traveller might need.
Prices are more reasonable than expected. Going in, it would be easy to assume it operates like a tourist-trap market — but that is not the feel. It is not as cheap as a big-city supermarket, but there is no serious markup either.
Locals shop here regularly, which is usually the clearest indicator that pricing and quality are fair.
What You Can Buy
- Food and drinks: local snacks, beverages, dried goods
- Clothing and accessories: from Vietnamese conical hats to t-shirts
- Travel supplies: luggage, bags, and travel accessories
- Souvenirs: a range of Phu Quoc and Vietnam-themed items
- Toiletries and daily essentials: cosmetics, personal care items

What to Buy: The Shopping List
Compared to other marts across Vietnam, Kingkong Mart stands out in one specific way: the variety of pepper. Phu Quoc is famous for its peppercorns, and this mart carries more types than anywhere else on the island. Beyond pepper, there is nothing that is strictly exclusive to Phu Quoc — but pepper alone makes it worth a stop.
Vietnamese Pepper Vocabulary
Useful terms if you are browsing the pepper section:
- Tieu — pepper (general)
- Tieu đen — black pepper
- Tiêu trắng — white pepper
- Tieu đỏ — red pepper (pink peppercorn)
- Tieu Trang Xay — pre-ground white pepper
- tiêu hạt — whole peppercorns
Red pepper — also called pink peppercorn — is the Phu Quoc specialty. It makes a good souvenir and is easy to pack.
Location and Getting There
There are two branches. The smaller one is inside the Duong Dong night market — fine for a quick browse if you are already visiting the market, but the range is limited.
For proper shopping, go to the main branch, located south of Duong Dong town centre. It is not within walking distance of most hotels, so take a Grab car or taxi. Grab motorbikes are an option, but drivers will not carry bags on the bike — if you plan to buy more than you can carry on your person, book a car instead.

Tips Before You Visit
Can I bring a suitcase or large bag into Kingkong Mart?
Security staff at the entrance will cable-tie your bag zipper shut before you enter. Large bags and suitcases need to be left at the storage area by the entrance.
You can bring them, but practically speaking, it is easier to leave large luggage at your hotel. Bring a small bag or just your wallet, buy what you need, and carry everything out in the store’s shopping bags.
Some products have a security lock on them — how do I buy them?
Vietnamese marts commonly put security locks on cosmetics and some other products to prevent theft.
If the item you want has a lock, find a nearby staff member and point at the product. They will remove the lock and hand it to you. Take it directly to the checkout from there.
